Mitsubishi WD-65831

  • $3,099
  • Single-chip DLP (wobulated)
  • Resolution: 1920x1080 effective
  • Size: 65"
  • Inputs: Two HDMI, three component, three IEEE 1394, three each composite and S-Video, two RF
  • Feature Highlights: CableCARD and Over-The-Air HD tuners, "Bright" and "Natural" memory settings for each input, PerfectColor color management, TV Guide On Screen program guide, NetCommand, built-in speakers
The Skinny: Back in the CRT days Mitsubishi was the big screen TV company. But this Diamond series set is more than a blast of nostalgia. Although the blacks would have to get a tad darker for this set to challenge the very best with dark room movie watching, and the image is n't quite as tack sharp as the competition, everything else about this set is just aces. The picture is big, bright and vividly colorful, with a superb and easy to use feature set. It looks realistic and natural if not downright seductive, especially when hi-def is on the menu. A big winner from the big screen company!

Samsung HL-S5688W

  • $2,599
  • Single-chip DLP (wobulated)
  • Resolution: 1920x1080 effective
  • Size: 56"
  • Inputs: Dual HDMI and component inputs, two S-Video, three composite video, two RF, one PC, one IEEE 1394, one USB
  • Feature Highlights: Compact, thin bezel design with small footprint, full customizable inputs including defeatable DNiE, five segment. 14,000 RPM color wheel for improved color accuracy, CableCARD and Over-The-Air HD tuners
The Skinny: How about an RPTV that performs like a premium set for a genuine budget price? Things are going very right over at Samsung. User can now customize each input separately and defeat the "enhancements" that in the past have diminished the image quality of Samsung's sets. The result is an RPTV with unusually accurate colors out of the box and spot-on colors after calibration, plus very sharp but exceedingly natural resolutino of detail and depth. The competitors with dynamic irises have deeper blacks, but this set just does too many things right for us to complain much. A new day for Samsung to be sure!
